These sessions will focus on the fundamentals of nonprofit board service.
Participating employees will gain a greater understanding of their responsibilities and duties as board members.

Being A Great Board Member
Speaker: Charles Weathers, The Weathers Group
Understand what makes a nonprofit organization different from a for-profit company, in plain, practical terms.
What you'll take away in this session:
- Understand what makes a nonprofit organization different from a for-profit company, in plain, practical terms.
- Learn what mission, vision, bylaws, and strategic planning are, and what the board's specific role is in each.
- Learn the three core responsibilities every board member holds and what they look like in real life.
- Clearly understand the difference between what the board does and what the staff does, and why that line matters.
- Know the most common mistakes new board members make, and how to avoid them from day one.

Protecting your Organization: Legal Essentials for Board Members
Speaker: Michelle A. Mapp, Attorney at Law
You don't have to be a lawyer, but you do need to understand the legal and ethical responsibilities that come with serving on a nonprofit board.
What you'll take away in this session:
- Understand the legal responsibilities of nonprofit board members.
- Recognize the purpose and importance of key governing documents, including bylaws, policies, and articles of incorporation.
- Identify common legal, ethical, and compliance risks facing nonprofit boards and strategies to mitigate them.
- Learn the basics of conflict of interest, personal liability, and the protections that exist for board members.

Even if you are not a financial professional, you need to know your responsibilities as it relates to board governance.

- Understand the four main ways nonprofits bring in money, and the board's role in each.
- Feel confident reading the key financial documents a board member works with.
- Understand what restricted and unrestricted funds mean, and why the difference matters.
- Know what financial warning signs to watch for, and what questions to ask when something feels off
- Leave knowing exactly what to look at before voting on any financial matter

High-Performing Boards: Strategy, Culture & Board Effectiveness

You've built the foundation. Now it's time to take your board leadership to the next level by applying everything you've learned in a live board simulation and creating your own personalized Board Service Action Plan

The speakers include dynamic nonprofit experts who regularly facilitate C-suite level learning sessions.
You are encouraged to complete all four sessions.
