The best scenario for executive turnover is to have a succession plan in place that allows for a six to eighteen month transition during which a board of directors can assess the state of the organization, determine which attributes are most valuable in a new leader, and implement a recruitment plan that allows for selection, hiring and orientation (including a turnover period ideally).

Hiring an Interim Executive Director can provide much needed support, particularly when a CEO resignation is unexpected or when the board needs a fresh perspective to assist in moving the organization forward.  As such, an Interim Chief Executive Officer can provide an independent, objective perspective on the efficacy of current organizational policies and procedures, make recommendations for and help implement needed changes to position the organization for the next phase of growth, and provide the board time to consider the best attributes needed in their next leader.
