Diversity and Inclusion Workshop with Dr. Derrick Gay

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, September 3, 2019

Dr. Derrick Gay, an internationally recognized consultant to organizations on issues of diversity and inclusion, cultural competency, and global citizenship, will speak Oct. 14 at the Richland Main Library.

Gay, a proud graduate of Whitney Young Magnet High School; Merit School of Music; Oberlin College (BA in Romance Languages); Oberlin Conservatory of Music (BM in Opera); Columbia University (MA, Klingenstein Program, Educational Leadership in Independent Schools); and The University of Pennsylvania (Ed.D Educational Leadership), is being sponsored by the Montessori School of Columbia. Space is limited to 150 people.

Dr. Gay has written articles for New York Times, Washington Post, Huffington Post, and El Tiempo Latino. He has been interviewed on NPR and 60 Minutes, and he has produced two TED Talks: The Double-Edged Sword, which explores the irony that the word diversity often undermines diversity goals; and Why Elephants Hold the Key to Success in the 21st Century, which explores the nature of racial discourse in the United States.

Recognizing the 21st-century reality of an interconnected global society, Gay partners with organizations around the world, to promote global citizenship.

“The Montessori School of Columbia invited Dr. Gay to our community to discuss critical issues. We want our students to understand the interconnected nature of our world, and we believe promoting these discussions in our community builds better leaders for our future,” said Karen Kuse, head of school.

This event is free and open to the public. It will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, in the auditorium of Richland Library Main, 1431 Assembly St. To attend, register on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/montessori-school-of-columbia-presents-dr-derrick-gay-tickets-69097980921
