Midlands NPs - Student Interns Now Available for Fall 2016 and Spring 2017!

Posted By Benjamin Bullock, Together SC, Monday, April 25, 2016

We are pleased to announce that SCANPO is continuing to partner with the University of South Carolina College of Arts & Sciences to place undergraduate student interns with our Lexington and Richland County member organizations!

We have 22 students who have are eligible for the program and are looking to be placed for Fall 2016 and Spring 2017. Only 15 students will be granted placements. They would be paid directly by the University through Federal Work Study grants, and their work schedule would need to be flexible around their class schedules. They can work up to 15 hours a week.

Since these students are receiving a federal work-study stipend for their work in this setting, there are a few requirements.

To be eligible to participate as a host organization for a USC intern, an organization must:

1. Be legally incorporated in the State of South Carolina, with an office in Richland or Lexington Counties.

2. Have been determined by the IRS to be exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c)3.

3. Be a member in good standing of the South Carolina Association of Nonprofit Organizations.

4. Commit to providing an experiential and meaningful experience that would prepare the student for future employment in the nonprofit sector.

5. Commit to hosting an intern for the Fall semester in 2016.

6. Provide any and all equipment necessary for the student to do their work.

7. Agree to a scope of work with the student and the internship director by the end of the second week of the program.

8. Agree to meet with the internship director as needed during the course of the program.

9. Agree that the intern cannot displace a regular employee, involve sectarian instruction or religious worship, partisan or non-partisan political activity.

Unfortunately, this means that organizations who have close connections to religious or political institutions are excluded from the program. This is a requirement imposed by the Federal Government, not by SCANPO or the University.

If your organization is interested in hosting an intern, contact Ben Bullock for access to the students' resumes and contact information.

Once you interview a student and offer them a position and they accept, then the College's Internship Director will reach out to you to make the arrangements. Please keep in mind that this is a time-sensitive arrangement. We'd like for the students to be placed in the next two weeks.

If you have any questions, please contact Ben Bullock at
