Together SC Board Elections - Ballots Open until April 10

One of your organization's rights (and responsibilities) as a nonprofit member of Together SC is to vote for a Board of Directors who will effectively lead Together SC in the years ahead.

This year's proposed slate includes three new nominees seeking a first term and three current Directors seeking reelection. They are recommended to the Membership by the Board and its Governance Committee.

Together SC's bylaws require:

  1. That the Board is to have no more than 21 and no less than 11 members. The Board, with the nominees below, will have 15 members on July 1, 2019.
  2. That a majority of Board Members be senior staff of 501(c)3 organizations. The Board, with the nominees below, will be 74% 501(c)3 staff, on July 1, 2019.
  3. That the slate be approved by a majority of a quorum of 10 percent of voting members. Each active nonprofit member organization has one vote. 

Please view the slate now and cast your ballot. Your ballot must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on April 10.

Nate has been South State’s head of Community Reinvestment for 15 years. Prior to this, he was a professor of business administration at Winthrop and led their Small Business Development Center. He currently serves as an adjunct business professor at USC Columbia. Nate has served with distinction on numerous Together SC member Boards, most recently the SC Assoc. for Community Economic Development, the Richland Library, and the ETV Endowment.

 

 

Christa Divis

Christa has served as CFO for both the Coastal Community Foundation and Trident United Way and recently accepted a partnership with Davis & Company, a CPA firm serving nonprofit organizations. She has broad leadership experience in the nonprofit, public accounting, construction, manufacturing, and transportation sectors. She is a Certified Public Accountant and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. Christa serves on Together SC’s Finance Committee.

A graduate of UofSC, she actively serves on local and national nonprofit Boards.

 


Paige Stephenson

Paige Stephenson joined United Way of the Piedmont in 2001 as VP of Resource Development, and was named President in 2016. She holds a M.S. and B.S. in Human Environmental Sciences from the University of Alabama. Paige is a Rotarian and also serves on the Boards for United Way Association of SC and Spartanburg Academic Movement. Paige chairs Together SC’s Advocacy Committee.

Madeleine McGee on Together SC's Board Leading by Example

I have to crow - just a little.

Last week, your Together SC Board kicked off its new fiscal year with an inaugural board meeting that was all about impact and “leading by example.”  We started by welcoming five new Board Members, all of whom attended (by phone or in person) an hour and a half long orientation led by our Board chair.  We’re a big believer in board member led orientation so I'm sharing our Orientation Agenda.
 
I know it’s just a piece of paper, but written member agreements adopted by the Board and signed by each member each year are an easy first step toward effective governance. Together SC’s Governance Committee and staff recently rewrote our agreement incorporating ideas from last year’s Board Leadership Summit. The Board’s first order of business was to review and adopt this new Board Member Agreement.  I would love to hear what you think.

While lots more was done, I want to personally thank the Board, and especially our Board Chair, Forrest Alton, for their thorough attention to my performance review.  It’s always helpful to know where you stand with the board and that you are all on the same page.  A quick reminder that evaluating the executive director is a Board responsibility as laid out in our Guiding Principles and Best Practices. And the first step MUST be adopting a written policy on how the review is to be done. Here’s our policy for evaluating the president.

Together SC Board Elections - Ballots Open from April 19 to May 3

One of your organization's rights (and responsibilities) as a nonprofit member of Together SC is to vote for a Board of Directors who will effectively lead Together SC in the years ahead.

This year's proposed slate includes five new and one returning members recommended by the Governance Committee to serve on Together SC's Board of Directors.

Together SC's bylaws require the Board to have no more than 21 and no less than 11 members. This year's Board will be in compliance with 15 members. The bylaws also require that the slate be approved by at least 10 percent of nonprofit members. Each active nonprofit member organization has one vote.
 
Ballots will go out by email April 19 to Executive Directors/CEOs (or to the primary contact on the member record if the ED/CEO is not listed). Your ballot must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on May 3.

Darnell has been Executive Director of Darlington County First Steps (DCFS) since 2008. She has expanded both the scope of services and the number of families now served by DCFS by partnering and collaborating with the United Way of Hartsville, Eastern Carolina Community Foundation, and numerous others. She is a licensed social worker, and was in 2017 elected Mayor of Lamar, SC.

Stacey Denaux

Stacey never thought she would be running a homeless shelter much less taking one from the brink of closing to serving as a model for homeless services. Today, One80 Place is thriving and leading the way in ending homelessness. With experience in hospitality and the Chamber, Stacey has taken best practices from business and applied them to the nonprofit world. As CEO of One80 Place, Stacey believes that strong nonprofits are critical to the overall economy, not simply charities doing good work.

After four years in direct service practice, he served in a variety of leadership positions both at the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control and HopeHealth, joining HopeHealth in 2000. He has 14 years of experience managing federal grant programs including Housing Opportunity for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA), Ryan White and 330 FQHC programs. Carl is the 2017 honoree for the Fred Sheheen Award for Nonprofit Leadership.

Erika joined the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation in 2013. She supported the development and execution of the Foundation’s vision and mission of improving the health of South Carolinians, particularly for the economically disadvantaged, by developing partnerships and collaborations with local and statewide health organizations, and managing and evaluating grant projects.

JoAnn Turnquist

JoAnn joined Central Carolina Community Foundation as President and CEO in 2009 after serving in sales leadership roles for a number of Fortune 500 companies. JoAnn works closely with her board of trustees and staff to develop and implement the vision and strategic direction of the Foundation. She leads a team dedicated to helping individuals, families, businesses and nonprofit organizations establish charitable funds to support causes they care about and make a difference in the Midlands and beyond. JoAnn is a 2013 Riley Diversity Fellow.

 *Ms. Kirby was appointed to the Board at its June 28, 2016 meeting to fill the unexpired term of Scott Graves. She now stands for election to her first full three-year term on the Board.

Open Letter from SCANPO Board Chair Member Ted Hendry

Hello, 

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” South Carolina is fortunate to have so many extraordinary nonprofit leaders doing extraordinary work every day. It is work worth doing, and it changes the lives of people and the life of our great state in measurable ways.

On July 1 we began a new fiscal and program year at SCANPO. Our commitment to you this year is to continue growing our ability to serve, support and strengthen you, the nonprofits and nonprofit leaders of South Carolina. I encourage you to take full advantage of the many services, learning opportunities, and networking events offered by SCANPO during the year. You will learn and grow, and, you’ll have a little (maybe even a lot) of fun along the way.

We ask that you fully engage with SCANPO in 2016-17 because we firmly believe that well-managed and responsibly governed nonprofits result in stronger and healthier South Carolina communities. When we all join together to participate in opportunities to build the knowledge, promote collaboration, and strengthen our collective voice, we become better leaders, our nonprofits become stronger, our communities are changed for the better and our state is transformed.  

That’s the prize for working hard at work worth doing.

I am honored to serve as chair of SCANPO for a second year.  As we enter a new year, I want you to help me in thanking our retiring board members who ably served for many years, and in welcoming our new board members and committee chairs.  I appreciate their leadership and their commitment to SCANPO and to you!

Nominations Sought For SCANPO Board

Dear SCANPO Members.

You can help strengthen SC’s nonprofit community by nominating strong candidates for SCANPO’s Board of Directors

We have decided to fill five seats with new Directors.  Directors serve three-year terms and the Board meets four to five times a year, typically the last Tuesday of the second month of the quarter. Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to review our current Board Member Responsibility Statement!

Given the current composition of the Board and the ongoing desire to have a diverse and representative Board of Directors, our Committee seeks candidates who:

  • are senior staff members of organizations that are active SCANPO members in good standing; 
  • believe in and already are engaged in SCANPO’s work as evidenced by involvement with the Nonprofit Summit, regional gatherings, committees, etc;
  • believe in life-long learning and the value of SCANPO’s Guiding Principles & Best Practices. Strong consideration will be given to nominees from organizations which have received the Award for Excellence or individuals who have received the Award for Leadership; and
  • help increase the diversity of age, ethnicity, gender, geography served, member type, and skills represented on the Board so that the Board is reflective of the diversity of its membership and the charitable nonprofit sector in South Carolina.

At least fifty-one percent (51%) of the Board must be employees of organizations that are recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in accordance with SCANPO Bylaws.

We will close nominations on Friday, March 11th at midnight so we can discuss during the Summit.

Our goal is to email the final slate to voting members in April when you will have two weeks to review and vote. New members will be invited to attend the Board retreat in May.
